A Book Review on Dr. Laurie Marker’s A Future for Cheetahs

Laurie MarkerFor more than 5,000 years, cheetahs have been the subject of human interest for being the only creatures that can sprint faster than 60 miles per hour. Unfortunately, however, these remarkable creatures are also among the world’s most endangered species and not many even have a clue. As an active advocate for cheetah conservation, Dr. Laurie Marker seeks to bring this grave concern to light. Through her book, A Future for Cheetahs, she shares the story of the creature’s race against extinction, hoping this will instigate a positive change in the plight of the endangered species.

Who is Dr. Laurie Marker?

Dr. Laurie Marker is the founder and the executive director of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) who has been working with cheetahs since 1974.

Her advocacy to save cheetahs started in 1977 when she first set foot in Namibia, bringing a captive-born cheetah. She wanted to see if cheetahs need to be taught hunting or if this process is instinctual to them. This was her first research geared to understanding whether or not captive-born cheetahs can be re-introduced into the wild.

Throughout her stay in Namibia, Dr. Marker discovered the conflict between cheetahs and livestock farmers. She knew the animals needed help. So for the following 10 years, she continued flying to Africa to learn more about the problems of wild cheetahs and what can be done to help the wild populations.

In 1990, Dr. Marker set up the CCF and moved to Namibia where she developed the Conservation Research Centre for wild cheetahs. In 2000, CCF finally opened a research station that featured a Visitor’s Centre and a Cheetah Museum and Education Centre open to the public.
