The volcanic ashes located at the foothills of the Sierra Mountains, located in Amador County, only added more character to the place. Add to it are the vibrant colors of foliage and flowers, as well as the rich soil that feeds the growing vineyards or grape farms in the region. Indeed some of the best wines are produced right here, in the country, particularly in Shenandoah Valley. Across the vast lands are also quaint and usually vintage cellars and wine rooms, some of which are generous enough to open their doors to the public. One of these is the Helwig Winery.

The Makings of the Good Grapes

Helwig Winery is one of the most awarded vineyards and wine rooms in the country, having won the following categories in 2011 and 2012: Sparkling Rose de Syrah, Rose de Shenandoah, Helwig Barbera, and Round Up White.

The grapes are produced across four large vineyards found in Northern California, including the counties of Solano, El Dorado, and of, course, Amador. And through the years, they are able to produce, store, and sell wines through their intricate cave system.

The caving process for wines isn’t entirely new. In fact, it’s been around for over 2,500 years, and most of the European cellars are implementing it. Caves are natural formations that provide a much colder temperature with just the right amount of humidity—the kind of climate the best wines need in order to age gracefully.

The technique, nevertheless, is hardly understood by many as a lot of winery owners prefer to keep it a secret. It isn’t the case with Helwig Winery. To make the wine tasting experience even more pleasurable and memorable, guests can take a tour not only on the winery but also on the charming and rustic caves, where you can find barrels of wines that are ready to be bottled. The journey involves going through around 5,000 square feet of caves.

The guests can also join in a very unique but satiating epicurean experience: the pairing of food and wine. The food is prepared with great love and detail from some of the best chefs in the area, Chef James and Mark. While you’re partaking the dishes, they enrich your knowledge and wine appreciation with lessons on the pairing.

Wine Club for the Elites

The Helwig Winery journey is so gratifying that it’s largely possible to come back for more. In fact, you may never have enough of the food and wine. Fortunately, they are now offering the exclusive Wine Club, which entitles all members a wide range of benefits including more than 15 percent discount on purchases, complimentary food and wine tasting that also extends to a number of friends, exclusive invitation to the Private Tasting Room annually, unlimited tours in the cave, and exclusive wines.

Music and Romance

The vineyards and wineries have become epitomes of romance and favorite destinations for weddings. In Helwig Winery, couples and their families and friends can celebrate their marriage in the sprawling pavilion, sweeping amphitheater, rustic Winery Oak, or grand Davancy Chateau.

It’s also a perfect venue for live music performances such as concerts because of the wide open spaces and incredibly beautiful natural backdrop.
