Have you heard about the Angela Bofill Experience?!
I was totally excited when I heard that one of my all time favorite divas, Angela Bofill was going to be on the TV One documentary show, Unsung talking about the Angela Bofill Experience and how she overcame two debilitating strokes in less than one year apart.
When I think of the Angela Bofill Experience, there is no other female vocalist I know of who has the strength, power and determination of Angela Bofill!
I have had my fair share of interviewing some of the worlds greatest divas such as Patti Labelle, Phyllis Hyman and Gladys Knight. But I am truly humbled and changed forever by having the opportunity to speak with Angela Bofill!
It all began one night when I checked my DVR to see if I had missed any Unsung episodes. Sure enough, they were profiling one of the most distinctive female voices in R&B, Angela Bofill! I sat quietly engaged on every word the narrator offered while sipping on spirits and puffing on a stogie.
Known for her three-octave range and the chart-topping singles like “This Time I’ll Be Sweeter,” “I’m On Your Side” and “I Try,” Angela Bofill’s life cchanged forever when she suffered from a major stroke in 2006 and a second stroke in 2007. As a result, she stepped down from the limelight to rehabilitate herself. Since then, she has worked thoroughly to learn how to walk and speak again. Angela Bofill has learned from all the things happened into her life from the past few years and now she is back with the Angela Bofill Experience.
The Angela Bofill Experience is a multimedia and narrative presentation of all the songs significant to her career. It starts from her humble beginnings growing up in the Bronx where her musical influences include Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations and all of Motown. The idea of the Angela Bofill Experience came from her manager Rich Engel after watching a benefit concert dedicated to her. According to “The Voice,” she met a singer named Maysa Leak when she was in Detroit and shortly thereafter, the first the Angela Bofill Experience occurred at San Francisco’s Rrazz room in July 2010.
