Amazon Web Services LLC (AWS) , the cloud computing arm of online marketplace Amazon.com, on Friday explained what happened during last week's service outage, which disrupted many of its customers' Web sites. AWS, formed by Amazon in 2006 to capitalize on the cloud computing hype, ran into problems on April 21 with a network configuration change that took several days to fix, slowing or disabling access to sites run by location-based social network Foursquare , fellow cloud service provider Engine Yard , social news outlet Reddit and several others.

The "creative brain" behind Google Creative Lab, Ji Lee , announced today he will head to Facebook to become the social network's newest Creative Director. The unexpected announcement came this morning at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn, N.Y., where Lee was a featured speaker for Creative Mornings, a "monthly breakfast lecture series of creative types" based in New York, Zurich, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Facebook's latest talent-grab from Google underscores a series of high-profile acquisitions from its biggest tech competitor.

Last year, Google launched Buzz , a social network "built right into Gmail, so you don't have to peck out an entirely new set of friends from scratch," boasted the search giant. "Buzz brings this network to the surface by automatically setting you up to follow the people you email and chat with the most…[and] building an easy-to-use sharing experience that richly integrates photos, videos and links, and makes it easy to share publicly or privately." Much to Google's dismay, Buzz turned out to be a huge bust, and not only because it was incredibly unpopular among users. The social network was riddled with privacy concerns, so much so that the Federal Trade Commission charged the company with using "deceptive tactics" and violating "its own privacy promises to consumers." Today, Google settled with the FTC.
