No track record? No problem. Here's how one fledgling start-up signed up 40 Fortune 500 companies as customers

When cataloging images of tuberculosis cells became too daunting for a research team at Harvard, they turned to crowdsourcing, and discovered that the masses have the ability to dramatically change the course of scientific research. Sarah Fortune, a tuberculosis (TB) researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health, had thousands of images of multiplying TB cells piling up in her lab. Her team of graduate students were inundated: all the pictures had to be labeled; some probably held the key to combating a deadly bacteria that infects one-third of the global population, mostly in poor parts of Asia, Africa and South America

Harvard Innovation Center's new director, Gordon Jones, wants to broaden the definition of entrepreneurialism to include not just tech startups, but all fields: lawyers, business people, Kennedy School bureaucrats-in-training, computer scientists, and so on. Today, Harvard announced that it had chosen Gordon Jones to head up its forthcoming Harvard Innovation Center.

And it did it all without spending a penny on advertising. Dropbox, the cloud-based file-syncing and file-sharing startup, is clearly one of this year's "it" girls among tech startups. Dropbox has climbed from four million to 25 million users since January 2010.
