Fermilab Set to Reveal "Interesting" Higgs Boson Results

V ANCOUVER Last fall, the Tevatron accelerator at Fermilab in Illinois shut down for good . The long-running accelerator had been eclipsed by the vastly more powerful Large Hadron Collider outside of Geneva, Switzerland, which since 2010 has been generating data at an impressive rate. The move appeared to quash any hopes that Fermilab had of discovering the Higgs boson , the last great known unknown of modern particle physics.

How Physics Limits Brain Power

Just as shrinking transistors makes computers more powerful, brains with smaller components could in principle pack in more power and become faster. Human neurons, however--and in particular, their long “tails,” called axons--may already be at (or close to) their physical limit.

EU to build most powerful laser ever in Prague

(PhysOrg.com) -- As part of the European Union's commitment to remaining at the forefront of technology, the European Commission (the governing body of the European Union) has laid out plans for three initial high powered lasers to be built in Eastern Europe with a fourth to come at a later date. The first superlaser in the project is to be built near Prague, with a goal of achieving exawatt class, which would make it at least a hundred times more powerful than anything that exists today.
