Search for advanced materials aided by discovery of hidden symmetries in nature

A new way of understanding the structure of proteins, polymers, minerals, and engineered materials will be published in the May 2011 issue of the journal Nature Materials. The discovery by two Penn State University researchers is a new type of symmetry in the structure of materials, which the researchers say greatly expands the possibilities for discovering or designing materials with desired properties. The research is expected to have broad relevance in many development efforts involving physical, chemical, biological, or engineering disciplines including, for example, the search for advanced ferroelectric ferromagnet materials for next-generation ultrasound devices and computers

Google Settles With FTC Over Privacy Concerns and "Deceptive Tactics" of Google Buzz

Last year, Google launched Buzz , a social network "built right into Gmail, so you don't have to peck out an entirely new set of friends from scratch," boasted the search giant. "Buzz brings this network to the surface by automatically setting you up to follow the people you email and chat with the most…[and] building an easy-to-use sharing experience that richly integrates photos, videos and links, and makes it easy to share publicly or privately." Much to Google's dismay, Buzz turned out to be a huge bust, and not only because it was incredibly unpopular among users. The social network was riddled with privacy concerns, so much so that the Federal Trade Commission charged the company with using "deceptive tactics" and violating "its own privacy promises to consumers." Today, Google settled with the FTC.

Online Shopping Just Got Easier With the Launch of Google’s Commerce Search 3.0

Google 's just improved its Google Commerce Search powers, giving online retailers a richer interface to offer online consumers trying find the right goods. Google says it's "building on the capabilities that have proved useful to" its retail partners, with a new system that will "help create an even more interactive and engaging experience for shoppers and retailers."
