More Efficient Dyed Cells Offer Hope for Cheap Solar Windows

Plants have been using a green pigment for billions of years to capture sunlight, turning it into a flow of electrons and storing its energy in the chemical bonds of big organic molecules (also known as food). Given that successful history, chemist Michael Graetzel of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne and his colleagues turned to a compound similar in shape and color to chlorophyll when they set out to build a better solar cell.

Move Over Earth, Wind & Fire: Sun, Air, and Water May One Day Power Everything

Scientists at CalTech are perfecting a technique that converts water, air, and sunlight into different kinds of fuel that could power everything from car engines to fuel cells in cell phones. It sounds almost too good to be true, from an environmental stand-point.

Biofuel-Harvesting Palm Oil Plantations Drive CO2 Levels Higher

As worldwide demand for both food and biofuels increases, so does the the demand for palm oil, which can be used for both food and biofuel production. But while biofuels may cut down on CO2 emissions compared to petroleum, palm oil plantations have the nasty effect of releasing CO2 into the atmosphere--and the problem is only getting worse, according to a study from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the National University of Singapore.
